The bibliographies and citations are generated via the plugins of word processors or directly in the program using the feature of Citation Style and Language styles. Most of the styles for citation of academic journals are available in the software and users can reformat the bibliography in few clicks according to the style they require. Zotero is capable of importing and exporting citations to and fro many formats including BibTex, Wikipedia Citation Templates, BibLateX, MODS, RefWorks, COinS, Evernote, and EndNote, Citation Style Language/JSON, several RDFs, refer/BibIX, RIS, TEI, and many more. Annotation is also possible in the program because Zotero can link the notes with bibliographic items. It enables annotation on PDFs and syncs them with the PDF reader on mobile through Zotfile plugin.

Zotero increased the number of languages it supports in 2014 and now it supports over 30 languages.
